Over the course of the last few months the Almaguin Fish Improvement Association has been attempting to secure the necessary permits to continue operation of its walleye hatchery in Magnetawan. This has been an ongoing event in Magnetawan for approximately the past 35 years as many of the local people are aware.
I am very pleased to report that on April 10 a delegation from the AFIA and our MPP Norm Miller met with the MNRF in Parry Sound, and at this meeting reached an agreement to continue our spawning and hatchery operations.
“I commend the AFIA for its considerable efforts over the past 35 years to help improve walleye populations and increase recreational angling opportunities on the Ahmic and Cecebe Lakes. I also recognize the important role your association has played as a promoter of responsible fish stewardship within the Parry Sound/Muskoka community. My ministry looks forward to working with the AFIA to fulfill the accountability requirements of the amended agreement”
The Honourable Bill Mauro,
Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry
The proposed agreement allows the AFIA to continue operation for another year, removes certain testing requirements, and allows autonomy in the setting and operation of the nets. In return the AFIA will maintain an accurate record system of fish spawned, hatched and released as well as commit to the development of a 5-year plan in conjunction with the Ministry.
The AFIA has since received a letter dated April 15, 2015 from The Honourable Bill Mauro, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, in which he states, “I commend the AFIA for its considerable efforts over the past 35 years to help improve walleye populations and increase recreational angling opportunities on the Ahmic and Cecebe Lakes. I also recognize the important role your association has played as a promoter of responsible fish stewardship within the Parry Sound/Muskoka community. My ministry looks forward to working with the AFIA to fulfill the accountability requirements of the amended agreement”
The entire membership of the AFIA applauds and appreciates the Minister’s support and commitment to our Association.
However, none of the above would have been possible without the amazing support of the local population, the local municipalities who passed and forwarded resolutions to the Minister, the outstanding response to our petition, the dogged determination of the AFIA membership and the support of the local media. And last, but far from least, the efforts of our MPP Norm Miller and his staff.

President Almaguin Fish Improvement Association
