The Almaguin Fishing Improvement Association (AFIA) and Learning Center has reached an open ended agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for a three year period. We have been granted permits to collect and hatch 2 million eggs per year. Stocking of the resulting fry will be for Ahmic Lake only.
The Ministry has issues with Lake Cecebe index netting results re: year class numbers and the overall population dynamics. Our submission to place a mini hatchery in Magnetawan Central Public School has been deferred at this point in time. Our input to the students at the water’s edge and the classroom will continue. We are very pleased with these decisions and look forward to a productive spawn this spring.
In addition, the Ministry is planning to develop a Zone 15 Management Committee. A member of our AFIA will sit on this board as a consultant. This is good news all around!
