After a lengthy series of negotiations, tremendous support from the municipalities in East Parry Sound, local petitions and Norm Miller our local MPP, the Ministry of Natural Resources has decided that the AFIA should be permitted to operate the fish hatchery in Magnetawan for another year. Great news!
The volunteers have already met and programmed a series of action plans to put into place, in preparation of the 2015 spring spawn of pickerel. The exact date of the spawn is, for the most part in the hands of mother nature. Generally it is accepted that the spawn begins with the water temperatures hovering in the vicinity of 9 degrees celcius. This however is not always the case. We will be monitoring the water temperatures very closely in the next few weeks and keeping an eye out for the fish during the late evening hours as they head up river to the dam in Magnetawan.
The volunteers at the AFIA are most appreciative of the support of the Cecebe Waterways Association and we look forward to our continued mutual interest in fish stocks in our lakes.
