Having completed one of the most productive years of capturing pickerel, collecting eggs and hatching and planting fry, 2015 was a tremendous year with 2 million 300,000 eggs collected. Our hatch rate was approximately 98 percent. The entire hatch was planted in Ahmic Lake as per the mandate from the Ministry of Natural resources and forestry.
We are currently meeting with the Ministry to develop long term (5 year) strategies on where do we go from here. The Ministry is adamant that we no longer place fry in Cecebe and Ahmic lakes as they appear to have healthy fish populations and no longer require assistance. However there are several surrounding lakes that are in dire straits – Old Man Lake, Silver Lake and Newell Lakes as examples.. The Ministry would like to do environmental assessments of these lakes to determine their status with some science and then take steps to plant fry in them and determine the success of the fry planting strategy. We are content with this situation as it keeps us in operation as a hatchery and improving area lake fisheries.
Negotiations are ongoing and decisions are still pending. More news as things become known. As always we at the A.F.I.A. are most appreciative of the continued support of the C.W.A. both morally and monetarily.
