MAGNETAWAN – The Magnetawan hatchery is swimming forward another day.
In an apparent about face, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry offered an agreement to the Almaguin Fish Improvement Association that lets the walleye-stocking operation run for another year, until March 21, 2016.
“We’re just thrilled,” association member Jim Shaw says. “It was a little bit of David and Goliath. It shows people in the community can make things happen.”
“I think Magnetawan’s name should be changed to the community that cares,” association president Doug Lidstone says.

The MNRF cancelled the fishery last month, citing possible harm to the genetic walleye population of Ahmic and Cecebe Lakes. After the termination, both community members and local government rallied together to show support for the fish stocking operation. Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP Norm Miller presented a petition with nearly 270 signatures at Queen’s Park and spoke with MNRF minister Bill Mauro on several occasions about the hatchery.
On April 10, the MNRF held a meeting at its Parry Sound office to discuss the hatchery. The association, ministry, and Miller attended, where the good news was given.
The News is currently in contact with the MNRF and members of the Almaguin Fish Improvement Association. See the April 16 print edition of the Almaguin News for more information.
